Job Description

The Staff Accountant is responsible for applying accounting principles and procedures throughout the organization’s accounting cycle. This includes updating and analyzing financial information, preparing accurate and timely financial reports and statements, and ensuring appropriate accounting control procedures. The GL Staff Accountant is also required to apply proven communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills to help support the accounting process.

Responsibilities

General Accounting

  • Perform monthly accounting activities including preparing, reviewing, and entering journal entries, document scanning, and filing.
  • Maintain various balance sheet account reconciliations
  • Review and validate non-stock purchase order requisitions for accuracy, completeness, and policy compliance
  • Primary backup for accounts payable and cash application (accounts receivable) activities
  • Maintain and coordinate the implementation of accounting and accounting control procedures.
  • Assist in the preparation of state and local tax filings.
  • Assist in the preparation of financial reports and statements as required.
  • Monitor and review accounting and related system reports for accuracy and completeness.
  • Resolve accounting discrepancies and irregularities.
  • Assist in tax and audit document gathering, collating, review, and submission.
  • Ensure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and year end close process.

Budgeting and Forecasting

  • Support budget process, as required
  • Review and maintain departmental budgets and forecasts, sales projections, operating expenses, and other accounting documents.
  • Continuous management and support of budget and forecast activities.

Accounts Management

  • Provide general support for the following activities:
    • Accounts payable
    • Accounts receivable (billing)
    • Credit and collections
    • Cash application
  • Reconcile financial statements.
  • Ensure accurate and appropriate recording and analysis of revenues and expenses.

General/Administrative

  • Supports the company vision and mission, and demonstrates the corporate core values in all professional activities.
  • Complies with all OSHA safety requirements, work rules and regulations.
  • Compiles and maintain all required paperwork, records, documents, etc.
  • Follows systems and procedures outlined in company manuals.
  • Maintains departmental housekeeping standards.
  • All other duties as requested by management.

 

Job Requirements

Formal Education and Certification

  • A. in Business, Accounting or Finance Required
  • 5 years of experience as a staff accountant may be substituted for the education requirement.

Knowledge and Experience

  • 3-5 years of accounting experience required. Experience in manufacturing or distribution companies preferred.
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, and economic principles.
  • Knowledge of applicable laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of and experience with financial computer applications and advanced Excel proficiency (Pivot Tables, VLookup, Sumif, Charts, etc.). Access skills a plus.
  • Experience with identifying trends and anomalies in data sets.
  • Experience analyzing financial data and prepare financial reports, statements, and projections.
  • Application level skills in Microsoft office suite including Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word.
